According to reports (I missed the game through work) Liam looked a class apart. I've watched him pre season training also and he is quality. It has been said by some he's better than Matt Green. He'll scare the crap out of Lge 2 this year I feel, and a striker such as he is the final piece in our jigsaw from the coming season.
Now come on get yersens back up where you belong this year. This year is your 5th year in the mire (same as us and Loooooun when we eventually got out)) it's time for you to light the blue touch paper.

Liam will be a class act if he stays fit and uninjured. We are going to miss him up front this season. We were a bit miffed that he didn't stay to repay what we gave him over two injury packed seasons when he was laid up, but understand he only has a couple of seasons to go as high as possible. I hope that he is cheered not booed at the friendly game. Yes we need to be promoted soon - this league is diabolical !

Two defensive member-ups, two goals.
A bit difficult to know how to react, really. On the one hand, it's always nice to see Dirty Leeds lose, but on the other hand, I'm not happy about Hearn's dishonesty with his public comments when still at the club and apparent attempts to engineer a move away at the start of last season.
I'd imagine he'll do OK at Mansfield until he gets injured again. Just hope he doesn't score against us on Friday night!

The point was this is the route most on here are against, banging it skyward to LJL. Thankfully no one's started on the 'why did we let Hearn go he's already scoring' just yet, and as was pointed out they were two very poor defensively-culpable goals more than anything.

It's obviously good to see any footballer come back from serious injury but it seems the case that Liam was looking to leave soon after he arrived and spouted a lot of rubbish about his apparent loyalty the club and coming back to prove himself pre-season. I suspect all of that was his insurance policy if he didn't get a place at Mansfield.

I would laugh my head off if Hearn smashed the ball into the faces of those slating him on Friday, hopefully knocking a sense of reality into them.
He'll get a great reception from most people in the ground, no doubt those with more than a single brain cell.

He is a tw@t, never wanted to play here, never wanted to come back for pre-season training, so why say it ? i appreciate what he did in his first season, and what a player he was. but like Hatton, and Rodman, i wont forgive them what they did/say

He got a bad reception from Alfreton fans when he first played against them for us, and he put 4 goals past them that day.
Some players buckle under the jeers of the opposition crowd, others (like Hearn) thrive.
If I was there I'd give him a round of applause as the team sheet is read out and leave it at that.

Nobody begrudges him moving to a league club, but he should have been honest about his intentions from the start instead of misleading our fans who were nothing but supportive of him. His underhand tactics to engineer a move to Mansfield while airing public platitudes about wanting to earn a new contract at town to repay our support were unforgivable. If I was able to go to the game on Friday I wouldn't be booing him, but I certainly wouldn't be clapping or cheering for him either.

My point too. If you've got a guy who can win a header just outside the opponents' box and direct it somewhere into the penalty area, and his strike partner is running into the box - there's a chance of a goal/penalty. Not the most beautiful tactic, but not one to be eschewed either - it will produce the goods from time to time. Other avenues should sensibly be attempted too. But if we're going to play LJL we'd be stupid to ignore one of his strengths. Let's face it - fans don't care how their team scores when they do. And most goals look 'defensively-culpable' in replay...Alan Hansen made a career of pointing this out!

Actually, I always thought Big Mac looked good at this last season. Much more than lumping it forward he'd take a touch and look up, surprisingly calm and accurate. I liked Mac Still, Big Mac goes into Hursts own little Room 101, with the door label: 'Why did we let him go exactly?' alongside Exhibit B, Ian Miller

I tend to agree with this opinion on Hearn. Fenty must be miffed - the club/Fenty paid for both his operations. "I need to be closer to home" Nottingham is what 2hrs tops away from GY by car? It's not even far.

I hope he isn't booed on Friday, but equally i do not see any reason he should receive messiah adulation, after all we paid his wages for nearly two years when he was injured and it looks (although obviously no-one can be sure) that he was planning on the Mansfield move for some time, despite his comments about maybe returning to us. Great player for us for a year, but he isn't our player anymore, so polite indifference from me.

Halfway through his 3 year contract he moves away from Grimsby,
All he wanted to do was play his football around the Nottingham area,
Fair enough if that what he wanted to do,
BUT
He should have come clean and ask for a transfer,
Then we might have got some money for him,
AND
He might have not got injured for the second time,
Yes he did well for the best part of his first season ( don't forget 0 goals in his first 10 games )
That cost us 3years salary,
I will not be at the game on Friday but if I was, I would not boo him,
I would not cheer him either,

How much did Peterborough offer us?
What happens if we get an offer of say £100,000 for someone else? Lesson learned... sell?

I remember when Buckley stole all those players from us all those years ago. Iirc his first game back was one of those great atmospheres that only blundell park can bring. The look if sheer disappointment on his face at full time (and the abuse that 'fans favourites' Gilbert, Rees et al received) brought to bare that all we are concerned about is our mighty mariners. Players come and go, but the club will always be etched on our hearts

He then had the cheek to say he wishes he never left grimsby and if he had the chance to change what happened he would. I highly doubt it. I'm sure the money west brom paid him off with on its own would be enough to buy a substantial house.
As for liam hearn I can't see the problem. He wanted to leave well before the end of his first season, we just wouldn't let him. I would have been drunk off if we'd have sold him for 100k
|
| Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong Update: I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly |

Not sure how much Peterborough offered, but makes me think back to when Bristol City offered 300k for Michael Reddy, boom hip injury, 300k value lost. Probally 400k+ lost through fate, and no better off in the short, or long term. Fenty might think twice about holding on to players who could probally fetch a price in the future...?

Underhand tactics? intercourse me. He hardly brought down the Government. He made sure he kept all possible options open to him for the future. Would you have honestly done anything different in your job?

And what would the fans reaction have been had he sold either player? "Lacks ambition" would have been a well worn phrase Unless we get offered seven figure sums, fans will never be happy at losing a 20+ goal scorer

It's pretty easy to see what to do with the benefit of 20-20 hindsight.
This forum would have been volcanic if Reddy and/or Hearn had been sold at the times mentioned.

Underhand tactics? intercourse me. He hardly brought down the Government.
He made sure he kept all possible options open to him for the future. Would you have honestly done anything different in your job?
In my job I don't have a weird group of people who are loyal to my current employer following me around asking about my future career plans, nor have I spent the last two years doing precisely intercourse all while still getting paid. In any case, it's possible to keep your options open as a footballer without outright lying. It's clear from Hurst, Fenty and Hearn's comments after he joined Mansfield that leaving had been his intention all along (even while he still had another year on his contract at Town - which is underhand). He should have either been forthright about this, or simply suggested he didn't know if he'd still be at Town at the start of this season. If he hadn't started banging on about wanting to earn a new deal at Town and made out his early release was only to save the club a bit of money, there wouldn't be so much animosity towards him.

And what would the fans reaction have been had he sold either player? "Lacks ambition" would have been a well worn phrase
Unless we get offered seven figure sums, fans will never be happy at losing a 20+ goal scorer
£12500.73???

To him it's a job. That's all it is. The fact people worship/worshipped him is irrelevant, it's still a job to him and he wants to do the best for himself and his family. At some point in your life everyone will say something that you think your employer will want to hear, even when you know full well it's not the truth. But it's the best thing to do for yourself. Look after number one, be that someone working in Maccies or a professional footballer.

Tend to think it's as well to leave it alone. We paid him three years salary for one good one, I know he didn't intend to get injured but he still wanted to be away. Clearly a fully fit Liam Hearn would be an asset to us but you could argue that if he'd stayed fully fit he wouldn't have still been here anyway.

I'm not going on Friday but if I was, I wouldn't boo or cheer him.
I don't begrudge him for leaving us. But he didn't need to come out with all that crap when it sounds like he wanted away at least a year ago (if not earlier) and had no intention of coming back to us.
And, similarly to Connell, someone who in effect only had one season with us, isn't worthy of the heroic, "legend" status that gets thrown around too easily these days.

This. We haven't had a player worthy of that status since Macca (John).

Telling the truth wouldn't have paid his mortgage nor for his flash car. Besides, he was under contract. I expect this is one of the reasons we don't give more that one year deals now
As for Macca, I though he tried to leave numerous times?? But the fact that he was on good money here coupled with afew deals falling through were the reason he stayed.

I think that's the point you are missing DHM. No one is bothered about what he has gone onto do and no one is argueing that they wouldnt do the same, of course we would! It's just what he said that bothered me. That game when he came back as special guest, my lad asked him was he coming back, to which he replied that he was gonna give his all to earn another contract pre season and would come to us 1st before doing anything else when that was never gonna be the case and he knew it at that time! Even if he had come out like Rodders did and explained himself, not that he has to, but you know what i mean it wouldve been fine and water under the bridge as far as i'm concerned but he has not done that so fook town and what we think of him. At the end of the day footballers are all the same. They take all the glory and fan worship then ram it down your throat until they retire then they give it " that was my best time playing for(insert club to suit) " so everyone's back up their ar$e again.

Please tell me we're not going to have a thread about 'this player' every time he scores?!
(Note: 'This Player', that's all he is now, another one of the many players who play in the English league system. Don't love him or loathe him. Couldn't care less what he does not. All I'm bothered about is what the current crop of players do!)

I understand where you're coming from and sometimes I think it would be far better if footballers just didn't say anything. But then they get accused of arrogance and not relating to the fans. What I don't think anyone has pointed out is the fact that Hurst probably didn't want Hearn back here. Hearn has made mistakes in what he said and I think probably trying to please too many people. If he had said to your lad 'Nah, I'm looking after myself and going for a better paid contract that's closer to home', he would have labelled a mercenary by many. I don't think he lied. As with Rodman he was just a victim of trying to say the right thing to appease people and then ultimately did what was right for him. Hearn isn't a bad guy. Far from it.

I don't know which world you live in but if I was wanting to move on to another employer the last people to know would be my current employer's and I wouldn't be telling anyone else in case it got back to them. And if anyone asked I would say "of course I love working here"
