I've been out all day and come in hoping to see a thread discussing the Macclesfield game highlights. There isn't one but having seen them through twice now both Bogle and Amond should be thanking Macca for taking the flak for yesterday's result away from them.  I sit in the Pontoon and haven't got the best eyesight in Grimsby but I was shocked at how inept the front pair were-particularly Bogle. Town could and should have been three up before the macca howler.
The other thing that struck me was how much Robinson was involved in everything we did right in the first half. Some of his passing was excellent and he linked up well with Mackreth. As I said on the Just Back thread I'm far from being Jack's biggest fan but those who say there was no end product yesterday (in the way of crosses) are just plain wrong. I counted at least three including the one which appeared to be going straight to the keeper but found Pearson's head nearly resulting in a goal-something Roly commented on in his coverage. Football is a team game and clearly something happened to the team spirit after the first goal as there was none of the energy of the first half on display in the second.
Given the evidence of the extended highlights I'm even more sure than I was yesterday that the changes had little or no bearing on the game. I doubt anyone would have queried the selection of Bogle and Amond. Macca is at the moment unassailable yet those three positions were the ones found most wanting.
Strange really..
Onward and upward-Borehamwood here we come.

The aim of argument or discussion should not be victory but progress.

I thought Robinson was really good first half but have been shot down many times for saying so. There's a player in there, no doubt in my mind.

The Amond one in the first half was the killer. Went for power when he should have passed it into the net. Had that gone in.............................

I'll watch the highlights later in the week when i'm more level headed about things.

I thought something similar,  in the first half it looked like only a matter of time before we got the breakthrough.

Bogle slipped when it looked like he was tapping into a empty net, Amond shouldve done far far better with the chance when Bogle rolled it back to him too. I wonder if he is a little bit off confidence and therefore went for power instead of rolling it home. Mackreth had the beating of their left back for most of the half too and put some decent crosses over.

But the timing of the goal was key to my mind. It deflated us just before half time and gave them the opportunity to reshape at half time to become even more defensive.

The second half however was an disgusting, there seemed to be no fight and passion, or game intelligence.

I have lost count of the amount of times we go 1 down and then insist on virtually every player standing in their box waiting for the high ball to come in, that we inevitably lose to their 6'4'' centre backs. We dont remain patient and attempt to draw their opposition out a little to open up the space, something which I believe our strikers thrive on rather than battling against bruisers.

Having said that we managed to work two free headers yesterday (Amond and Pittman?) and both ended up as shots off target which is exceptionally poor, even at this standard.

I watched the highlights and if we had won 4-1,

I don't think Macclesfield could have complained.

Agree we have two problems,

1.  We look like conceding goals all the time,

2,  We are not taking our chances at the other end,

Having said that we have scored plenty but the 1st goal of the game is the most important,

We have to make sure its us that scores it then we will not be dropping silly points all the time.

Re the strikers same story versus Lincoln TBH............ Across both games opportunities missed when others who where in space could have just slotted them away. Re Monday lets not forget the one Marshall blasted over in the first half when it looked like he had an open goal.

We don't look like conceding goals, 6 of our 11 goals conceded have been individual mistakes, whether it be players or officials.

Don't remember that one? I know Marshall had one shot which went over but there were a heck of a lot of players in front of him at the time.

For me, the worst miss was Amond's when he blasted over with all the goal to aim at though some of the headers which were spurned weren't very clever. I suppose we can forgive Bogle for losing his footing when it looked like he must score because you can't legislate for a slip like that in slippery conditions.

Thought exactly the same as the original poster.

I've avoided reading too much of this forum since Monday but from what I have read that a popular opinion is that Hurst cost us with his selections and McKeown's mistake again proved costly.

I can't really be bothered to get into an argument about Hurst but the point about the missed changes is very true.   At full-time on Monday I was disappointed with the overall performance, especially our lack of reaction to going a goal down.

The highlights are by no means a measure of the game but we wasted so many chances throughout the game.   Most frustratingly is how we didn't work their 'keeper much at all.

With regards Robinson, I thought he did ok on Monday.  His biggest crime is that he's too similar in style to Clay so we didn't have a balance in the engine room.  The highlights definitely show him as a creative player and, if anything, he appears more energetic than Clay in his play.    Equally so I didn't think Clay was awful on Saturday but he was no better than Robinson.

Considering his lack of a pre-season I think Robinson is a decent player and once fully fit will be a really good player for us.  I personally think he's the victim of arriving at a time when the fans are in a bit of an anti-Hurst phase.

I am a season ticket holder, and been to Kidderminster and Lincoln away.

But if Monday was my first game, i would say Hannah & the shop would walk into our team...

Bogle & Amond have already got a reputation of being good for us, but everyone still pointing the finger and Macca...

Whilst McKeown did make a mistake, the strikers made 3-4 mistakes in missing easy chances

Can you imagine the slating LJL would have received had he lost his footing like Bogle with an open goal to aim at?

But let's not point fingers too much. Strikers are always going to miss chances and this is why you need to make sure you aren't leaking goals at the back. If we can tighten things up at that end of the pitch, results will undoubtedly improve.

Regarding the highlights, is Mariners Player still worth the sign up fee? Has there been any mention of any more potential live streams of home matches? I'm unsure whether to sign up.

Finally watched the highlights and it's pretty much as i remember it except that Mackreth had a far more effective game than i thought, so apologies to him. The lad that scored 2 for them had a good game i thought watching live on monday and noticed he has 5 goals this season in a fairly poor side.

Robinson far more involved and creative than Clay in our good moves and i can't understand why he is getting so much flak. Yes, he's similar to Clay but perhaps it's the latter that needs to up his game, not the new lad.

The Macca howler looks even worse than i remember and by god did we miss some opportunities.

I can't remember the last time we beat them at BP.

Didn't go to that one, but went the season before and saw a certain Jon Parkin take us to pieces. Probably the only time I saw Whittle completely unable to deal with the physical side of the game when facing a forward. Hope that's not an omen for the season!

Frigging hell, it's not only your eyesight that needs seeing to but your hearing, Roly Godfrey hasn't commentated on a Town match for years, ever since the club p!ssed him off.

A chance to comment on something to do with the game and an alternative view to the one that seems to be prevalent on this site at the moment and the best you can do is have a go at my hearing. The Fishy used to be a home for decent debate.
I'll take your non-comment as a tacit agreement that actually you got it wrong in your assessment of the reasons for Town's failure on Monday..

FFS get a grip, you made a comment about your eyesight I was making a light hearted comment about your hearing when you clearly got it wrong about the commentator.

As for my thoughts about the game, they haven't altered I still say we were crap in the second half and PH shouldn't have p!ssed about with the team selections, oh and we still lost 2-0, we are still 12 points behind the top team and results like Monday are just not acceptable.
