Well I think the title of this thread is extreme and a bit unfair. That said, I saw Clay play pre- season and thought he was quite comfortably below par, so I'm very surprised to see him offered a contract. In fact, hang on....I'm not at all surprised. This is not the sort of signing that an aspiring automatic-promotion hunting team would make IMO, but then I'm not getting that vibe generally. Yet another compromise I feel. Still, of course, good luck to him, I hope he turns out to be f@cking brilliant.

I have replied to the highlighted text in your post, having read it again, it is still relevant.

You stated that he showed improvement in the game against Mansfield, he didn't.

UTM

Oh but he did and it was easy to see, give him a chance

Let's be realistic here. I've read a hell of a lot of exaggerated views on here and on twitter today regarding Clay. Worst trialist in the history of gtfc etc etc

I only saw him in the Donny game, but could see during that game against much higher level opposition, that he isn't the awful player some are making out. I said after that game that he looked tidy enough but didn't have much of a presence and didn't look to particularly have any big strengths. A bit like a steady all-rounder, playing it simple and to feet.

He wasn't giving the ball away, wasn't caught out of position all the time and wasn't really making mistakes as such. The level of criticism towards him has been way over the top. I said last week I wouldn't have signed him, but what were we expecting as a signing to come in and be the 4th central midfielder?

People slating him seem to be using certain quotes or views but ignoring others that don't suit their argument. Let's give him a chance and support him. Judge him after a few games against teams in our league with our first team, because whether we like it or not, we don't play with the same motivation and intensity as a league game.

We're a Conference team and he's going to be our fourth choice centre mid. Who were people expecting? I don't buy that we could have gone with 3 in the squad complimented by loans either as one suspension or injury and you don't have anybody for the bench.

As I said in a previous posting this board is already sliding the way of the previous one with it's negativity. Just because of a few trial games a minority (in the greater supporter sense - not fishy posters) chose to bring down this latest signing with their superior footballing knowledge or prowess with researching historical posts.Do you not have faith in Paul Hurst? If not try applying for his job and see how far you would get. I haven't seen any of the pre-season games I admit but then again it's what happens when the season has started that interests me far more. Perhaps the Fishy admin should start to issue a few cards before we sink again.

And if Craig Clay has the misfortune to read these comments, I do hope that his thoughts amount to something like - "I'll show you ignorant bar stewards that I can play", and then knuckles down to prove the knockers wrong.

This signing is down to right age, right height, right cost in wages and Hurst's personal opinion (right or wrong) of what he can get out of the player.

Some of us hope he succeeds with his 3 rights and 1 wrong !!

Only time will tell!

At least give the lad a chance! he's a Mariner now, whether people like it or not !

I'll wait till I've seen him play before I pass judgement - as should everyone else!

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

I am more shocked about the obvious lack of education today especially spelling.

Welcome Clay.
